J/24 Fleet 24

Sailing out of the Lake George Club in Diamond Point, NY, Fleet 24’s racing series is every Wednesday night from mid-May through the end of August. Check the Wed Night Racing page for details. The SIs are the same, one start for all classes, however Fleet 24 scoring is separated out from the PHRF for our series. Also different is Fleet 24 counts 70% of your best finishes for the races scheduled.

The last two years have seen a dramatic increase in J/24, Fleet 24 participation levels. We have grown from 6 starters on a Saturday to 13 on Wednesday night, starting amongst a PHRF fleet of 28 boats! Wednesday nights provide an excellent format, tried and tested for over 40+ years on Lake George using volunteer racers as RC. See 2008 Final Standings.

J/24s also have organized One-Design racing on Saturday mornings and afternoons throughout the summer for Lake George Club members only, and also on scheduled Sundays hosted by the Lake George Corinthian Yacht Club for its membership. Fleet 24 is a member of J/24 District 7.

J/24 Changing of the Colors Regatta

Fleet 24’s premier event each year is the Changing of the Colors Regatta, held on the fourth weekend after Labor Day. The Colors attracts talented skippers from all across the northeast, typically drawing 50-60 boats each year.

Past winners have come from as far as Peru (a sailor from the J/24 Worlds held in Newport the week previous), and sailing heavyweight Terry Hutchinson has his name etched on the Colors Trophy. The Colors is almost as old as the J/24 itself; 2008 was the 30th anniversary for the regatta.

2009 Colors Results

Due to the fact that only one race was sailed (and in fact that race was shortened), this event didn't meet the criteria of a Regatta. Therefore, prizes of assorted sailing wear were given to the top five skippers. This was the first time in the history of the regatta, or any other regatta sailed by the participants of the Colors (that anyone can recall), that the winds failed them entirely. See the results of Sunday morning's shortened race.
